Old looms need love, too…

John here…

I was contacted by my sister a couple of months back, and she asked if I’d be interested in a loom. A non-weaving friend was trying to move one along to a nice home. Very decent for a non-weaver to recognize the value of such a contraption.

So, I am now the curator (can one actually own a loom any more than one can own a cat?) of a Model 131 Bernat loom. Eight harnesses, ten treadles, complete with mouse turds in the castle.

Bernat Model 131
Need to replace tie-ups
Lots of dust
Heddles are in good shape
A mouse found a winter home

I don’t quite know what I’m going to do with this loom. It does need a nice home, and I don’t really have the space, unless I move my four-harness out.

My aim at this point is to clean it up, restore it, and move it on to a new home. Slowly. I may not let it move on at all. I’ve received permission from She Who Must Be Obeyed to keep it, with minor restrictions as to where in the house it can reside.

As an aside, does anybody have a copy of the manual for a Bernat Model 131 Floor Loom?

  1. Do you still have this loom? I know it’s an oldish post, so you might not. I have the same model, and have been weaving on it for about 2 years now. Let me know if you need any info…I’m happy to help if I can.

  2. I just acquired the 131b model. It is rough shape and needs a lot of love. I would like to know if you found a manual or have restoration advice to share?

  3. I am very interested in how the restoration has progressed. I have also been given a Bernat loom. It is missing the back warp beam and brake assembly. Would you send me several picture of these pieces? As much detail as possible please

    1. My part of the restoration faltered, but I’m hoping for a nice report next time I see the weaver to whom the loom was gifted.

  4. Hi

I just acquired a Bernat 131-C and looking for a manual as well.

Were you able to locate one by chance?

Trying to figure out how to work the warp beam as it’s missing a handle (?).

I also got a sectional warp attachments and that’s a little puzzle I haven’t figured out yet.

    Thanks
    Pasi

  5. Did you ever find a manual for the Bernat loom? I was gifted one several years ago but was never able to find anything.
